Decision:

Moved by Councillor Chung, seconded by Councillor Forster –

It is resolved that:

(A)        Council note:

(i)          the City of Sydney is Australia's global gateway city;

(ii)         as Australia emerges from severe lockdowns, open public space is essential to reconnecting communities and people safely; and

(iii)        many visitors, small businesses and residents are concerned that public space in Sydney is not being maintained to a high enough standard befitting a global city and that basic services such as cleaning, footpath restoration, removal of dumped rubbish and general daily street maintenance are being ignored or forgotten as Sydney concentrates on grand projects; and

(B)        the Chief Executive Officer be requested to:

(i)          provide Council with a current audit and condition report of public space cleaning conditions in the Sydney local government area;

(ii)         provide Council with a report of outstanding cleaning and public space maintenance requests and length of time that requests are outstanding; and

(iii)        update Council quarterly with public space condition of cleaning reports and outstanding requests.

It is resolved that:

(A)        Council note:

(i)          the City of Sydney is Australia's global gateway city;

(ii)         as Australia emerges from severe lockdowns, open public space is essential to reconnecting communities and people safely;

(iii)        managing waste and resources, whether from homes, parks, public spaces, is one of the City’s core services;

(iv)       every day, City street cleaners work hard to sweep our roads, lanes and footpaths and our cleansing and waste teams are running at full capacity;

(v)         as well as bin collections, booked bulky waste collections, graffiti, bill poster and illegal dumping removal, our teams are:

(a)        cleansing streets and footpaths around hospitals, schools and commercial areas, in some areas twice a day;

(b)        steam cleaning plazas and major pedestrian footpath areas;

(c)         street cleaning around transport hubs;

(d)        cleaning bins along George Street with disinfectant and increasing bin cleaning in high pedestrian areas;

(e)        using disinfectant pressure cleaning in high pedestrian areas;

(f)          increasing cleaning of footpaths, benches, handrails across the city; and

(g)        the public can report maintenance issues through the City app, asset inspectors patrol our streets daily, and the City works on a schedule of repair works for footpaths and streetscapes in priority of need; and

(B)        the Chief Executive Officer be requested to provide information via CEO Update, to inform Council whether there has been a recent increase in residents and businesses concerned Sydney’s public domain is not being maintained to a high enough standard, and, if so, take necessary action.
