The Committee unanimously supported the recommendation.

Background

As part of the City of Sydney's and NSW Government's $20 million partnership fund to boost the city centre economy, support businesses and create jobs in response to Covid-19, the City advertised an Expression of Interest (EOI) seeking Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists to create four public artworks that reimagine city spaces and bring Sydneysiders back to the city.

Barlow Street, Haymarket, has been selected for one of four art installations in response to the publicly advertised EOI.

In December 2020, the Committee endorsed the temporary road closure and parking changes for the installation of public art in Barlow Street from 4 January 2021 to 30 June 2021.

The Barlow Street Forest artwork has received overwhelming support and as such the City is proposing to extend the installation of the artwork and investigate opportunities to make it permanent.

Any opportunity to make the artwork permanent will require an application in accordance to Section 116 of the Roads Act 1993.
