Darlinghurst Public School Pedestrian Crossing – Liverpool Street

Decision Maker: Council

Decision status: Recommendations Determined

Decision:

Moved by Councillor Ellsmore, seconded by Councillor Worling –

It is resolved that:

(A)      Council note:

(i)         for many years, the parents and school community of Darlinghurst Public School have been advocating for a safe way for children and parents to cross Liverpool Street to Darlinghurst Public School. It has been reported to Councillor Ellsmore’s office that there have been near-miss incidents and a long history of efforts (9+ years) by the school community to date;

(ii)        there are some 300 students at the school which has grades K-6. As well as the school, the site at Womerah Avenue Potts Point also hosts an after-care facility. This means the site is in use between 7.30am and 6.30pm, across both peak hours;

(iii)      the City has considered various options for this crossing, and have begun a feasibility assessment;

(iv)      however, in late 2024, the Council informed the Parents Committee that Council is fully programmed until 2028, and that the crossing would be considered or built sometime after 2028; and

(v)       by comparison, at the nearby SCEGGS private school a number of street parking spaces have been made available for drop off and pick up;

(B)      Council agree to investigate bringing forward planning for a crossing or other safety measures for students crossing Liverpool Street to Darlinghurst Public School; and

(C)      the Chief Executive Officer be requested to:

(i)         provide advice as required about updates needed to the Council budget and delivery program to support the safety measures; and

(ii)        keep the community updated, especially the school and parents concerned about the safety issues.

Carried unanimously.
