Decision Maker: Council
Decision status: Recommendations Determined
Moved by Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Maxwell, seconded by
Councillor Thompson –
It is resolved that:
(A) Council note:
(i) residents of Glebe, especially those who may be older or have a physical disability, have mentioned how the Glebe Light Rail Stop and the streets around it are very inaccessible;
(ii) because of there being only one access ramp on one side of the stop some residents need to walk from Lower Avon Street to the Palmerston Avenue stop which is a very steep and often inaccessible walkway;
(iii) public transportation is more likely to be used by residents that are older or have a physical disability who require a higher degree of accessibility;
(iv) the streets leading to the Glebe Light Rail Stop have also been mentioned as very steep and hard to walk around to get to the Glebe Light Rail Stop; and
(v) this city believes in accessibility, and we must be constantly reviewing our city’s infrastructure and doing our best to design and promote accessible spaces and transportation;
(B) the Lord Mayor be requested to write to the Minister for Transport and the Parliamentary Secretary for Transport lobbying for an accessible ramp or lift to be installed on the Lower Avon Street side of the Glebe Light Rail Stop; and
(C) the Chief Executive Officer be requested to:
(i) review the infrastructure and streets that the City of Sydney manages around the Glebe Light Rail Stop and work with Transport for NSW to see if any possible upgrades, fixes, or redesigns are needed to make the stop and surrounding streets and walkways more accessible;
(ii) have the City of Sydney look at the walkways between the Lower Avon Street to the Palmerston Avenue entrances of the Light Rail Stop to see if there is any upgrades, fixes, or redesigns that could be made to make it more accessible; and
(iii) provide updates to Council via the CEO Update.
Carried unanimously.
