Upgrade to the Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial Artwork in Green Park, Darlinghurst

Decision Maker: Council

Decision status: Recommendations Determined

Decision:

Moved by Councillor Phelps, seconded by Councillor Forster -

It is resolved that Council:

(A)      thank artists Jennifer Gamble and Russell Rodrigo for their lasting Memorial to the LGBTQI victims of the Holocaust, installed in Green Park, Darlinghurst in 2001;

(B)      note that the Memorial commemorates the thousands of LGBTQI people persecuted during the Nazi regime in Germany, including thousands murdered in concentration camps;

(C)      note the ongoing challenges that LGBTQI people face, including being up to 14 times more likely to attempt suicide and five times more likely to experience major depressive episodes compared to non-LGBTQI people;

(D)      note that the current state of the Memorial requires investment to restore the work to its original state;

(E)      note that the City has received enquiries about the condition of the Memorial from stakeholder groups;

(F)       note that staff have met with one of the original artists, Russell Rodrigo, on site, followed by archival research to source the original drawings and documentation; and

(G)      commit to completion of conservation or replacement of the Memorial in consultation with the original artists.
