Traffic Calming in Davoren Lane, Surry Hills

Decision Maker: Council

Decision status: Recommendations Determined

Decisions:

Moved by Councillor Forster, seconded by Councillor Chung -

It is resolved that:

(A)        Council note:

(i)          Davoren Lane terminates in a T-intersection with the south side of Foveaux Street, Surry Hills, between Richards Avenue and Bourke Street;

(ii)         Foveaux Street in this area has heavy pedestrian traffic on its south side;

(iii)        Davoren Lane is a narrow thoroughfare with solid walls built close to the kerb on both the west and east sides of the laneway;

(iv)       these walls obscure drivers' views of pedestrians walking along Foveaux Street on both sides of the laneway as vehicles approach the T-intersection from Davoren Lane;

(v)         the solid walls also severely restrict pedestrians' sight lines as they approach on Foveaux Street to step off the curb to cross Davoren Lane;

(vi)       as a result, near misses between vehicles and pedestrians occur regularly at the T-intersection; and

(B)        the Chief Executive Officer be requested to immediately investigate and implement options for traffic calming and/or signage in Davoren Lane on the approach to the T-intersection with Foveaux Street, in order to improve pedestrian safety.

Carried unanimously.
