Decision

The Committee carried the recommendation unanimously.

Background

Bourke Lane, Redfern, between Zamia and Telopea Streets, is a narrow laneway (approximately 4.4 metres wide) that facilitates waste collection for properties fronting Bourke and Kepos Streets.

On 20 September 2018, the Committee endorsed allocation of parking on the western side of Bourke Lane, Redfern, between the points 10 metres and 83.4 metres, and 88.4 metres and 105.9 metres north of Zamia Street, as “No Parking 6am-10am Mon Only". This was to enable the City’s cleansing vehicles to safely access the laneway for waste collection.

To ensure a more efficient service for residents, the City will be changing the waste collection period from every Monday, from 6am to 10am, to every Wednesday, from 6am to 6pm. This change will come into effect as of Monday 1 July 2019.

To allow cleansing vehicles to continue to safely operate in the laneway, it is proposed to update the “No Parking” restriction to match the new waste collection period.

Comments

The kerb space on the western side of Bourke Lane, Redfern, between Zamia and Telopea Streets, where the changes are proposed, is currently signposted as “No Parking 6am-10am Mon Only".

On-site inspection shows there is a need to provide “No Parking” restrictions during waste collections periods to ensure that cleansing vehicles can operate in a safe and efficient manner. To allow cleansing vehicles to continue to safely operate in the laneway, it is proposed to update the “No Parking” restriction to match the new waste collection period.

Consultation

The City notified local residents and businesses in the area of the changes to waste collection. There has been one response inquiry as to whether the parking restrictions will be updated to match the new collection time.

Financial

Funds are available in the current budget.
