Reactivation of Haymarket

Decision:

It is resolved that:

(A)        Council note:

(i)          businesses in Haymarket contribute considerably to the success of the City of Sydney’s local economy;

(ii)         fear of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) is resulting in reduced foot traffic in Haymarket;

(iii)        some business owners in Haymarket are reporting an 80 per cent reduction in patronage;

(iv)       COVID-19 currently poses very little risk to the Sydney community and there have only been four confirmed cases in NSW, all of which have since been discharged from hospital in good health];

(v)         our recent Lunar New Year celebrations in the City of Sydney are a great example of how the City of Sydney Council can activate Haymarket; and

(vi)       the City of Sydney Council is dedicated to continuing to support the Chinese business community in Haymarket by encouraging people to visit this area;

(B)        the Chief Executive Officer be requested to:

(i)          in consultation with the Haymarket Chamber of Commerce, urgently investigate the ways in which the City can support the activation of Haymarket; and

(ii)         report back to Councillors on actions taken via the CEO update.
