Recommendations

It is recommended that the Committee endorse the following temporary full road closures in Surry Hills:

(A)      Eastbound traffic movement of Devonshire Street, between Chalmers and Elizabeth Streets; and

(B)      Chalmers Lane at Devonshire Street.

Background

Due to the construction of the CBD and South East Light Rail (CSELR), Chalmers Lane at Devonshire Street has been closed since late 2016 and the eastbound traffic movement of Devonshire Street, between Chalmers and Elizabeth Streets, has been closed since early 2017.

To determine if it is necessary to reopen Chalmers Lane at Devonshire Street and the eastbound traffic movement of Devonshire Street, the City of Sydney proposes to temporarily maintain the existing road closures.

Comments

Due to the construction of the CBD and South East Light Rail (CSELR), Chalmers Lane at Devonshire Street has been closed since late 2016 and the eastbound traffic movement of Devonshire Street, between Chalmers and Elizabeth Streets, has been closed since early 2017.

The construction of the CSELR in this section of Devonshire Street is nearing completion. To determine if it is necessary to reopen Chalmers Lane at Devonshire Street and the eastbound traffic movement of Devonshire Street, the City of Sydney proposes to temporarily maintain the existing road closures.

Should the City decide to permanently close Chalmers Lane at Devonshire Street and the eastbound traffic movement of Devonshire Street, an application will be made to Roads and Maritime Services in accordance to Section 116 of the Roads Act 1993.

Consultation

The City will notify the local community that it will maintain the existing road closure of the eastbound traffic movement.

Should the City decide to permanently close Chalmers Lane at Devonshire Street and the eastbound traffic movement of Devonshire Street, the proposal will be consulted in accordance to Section 116 of the Roads Act 1993.

Financial

Funds are available in the current budget.
