Referendum on Council Wards

31/10/2022 - Referendum on Council Wards

Moved by Councillor Scott, seconded by Councillor Ellsmore -

It is resolved that:

(A)      Council note the previous referendum on wards held in 2008 following the amalgamation of South Sydney and City of Sydney Councils;

(B)      Council note the changes to the City of Sydney Act 1988 to modify the voting eligibility at the 2016 election and subsequent elections;

(C)      Council support holding a referendum on the introduction of a ward structure; and

(D)      the Chief Executive Officer be requested to provide advice on constitutional referendums and all legislative requirements.

The motion was lost on the following show of hands:

Noes (8)          The Chair (the Lord Mayor), Councillors Chan, Davis, Gannon, Jarrett, Kok, Scully and Weldon*

Motion lost.

*Note – Councillor Weldon abstained from voting on this matter. Pursuant to the previsions of clause 10.4 of the Code of Meeting Practice, Councillor Weldon is taken to have voted against the motion.
