Moved by Councillor Phelps, seconded by Councillor Vithoulkas –
It is resolved that:
(A) Council note:
(i) the great work of local people creating and tending to community gardens and green spaces throughout the City of Sydney;
(ii) the ongoing support provided by Council to these projects, including horticultural advice, seeds and flora, land and grants;
(iii) the requirement of watering facilities to ensure that plants survive and flourish in an urban environment;
(iv) that approximately 99 per cent of the state, including the Sydney area, is considered drought affected by the NSW Department of Primary Industries (30 June 2018);
(v) that a mobile community garden watering service is currently not provided by Council; and
(vi) that the Council’s Parks and Open Space Management Contract is currently in the process of negotiation; and
(B) the Chief Executive Officer be requested to:
(i) undertake a survey with community groups across the local government area to determine the demand for a mobile community garden watering service;
(ii) explore ways to include a mobile community garden watering service in the Council’s Parks and Open Space Management Contract; and
(iii) report to Council the options available to include a mobile community garden watering service in the Parks and Open Space Management Contract.
